Cleaning validation

Validation of the cleaning procedure is part of the design or purchase of a machine.

For closed equipment, this can be done by checking the levels of chemicals in the cleaning fluids. For example, after using lye as a cleaning agent, a dirty line will initially show little lye in the outflow, because everything is used to break down the contamination. Over time, however, the value must rise to the input level. If this takes a (very) long time, there may be contamination in a poorly reached area, which disappears slowly.

Open equipment, such as a filling machine or the inside of a tank, can be sprayed with a food-safe dye. After cleaning, even a small amount of residual dye can be detected using UV light. This indicates that the wetting at that location has not been sufficient, and that soil (product) may also remain there. And residual material can be a source of nutrition for microorganisms.
